Trier lies in a valley near the border with Luxembourg and within the important Moselle wine region. The Mosel is mainly famous for its wines made from the Riesling grape. After having visited the town, don't forget to try the local specialities: "when in Rome, do as the Romans do!"

Founded by the Celts in the late-4th century BC, Trier is largely considered the oldest city in Germany. The main sight is probably the Porta Nigra: a large Roman city gate, whose name "nigra" refers to the dark colour of stones used in it.

Famous for its antique university, if you are interested in Philsophy, you'd love to visit the house of one of the founders of Marxism, Karl Marx who was born in the city in 1818.

Many things have changed since then, but Trier still remains a cornerstone of German history and culture.
