Just to the side of Ueno station you will find a series of street stalls underneath the tracks of the Yamanote train line. It's a type of market on Ameyoko Street (アメ横). Here's a map of it's location.

The majority of stalls and small restaurants are all fitted together under the railway lines, creating an atmosphere which seems like it's been taken from Cyber Punk type film like "Blade Runner". Well, that's not actually too far-fetched, given that Tokyo's black market used to be here and the smugglers used to sell of their secret merchandise underneath the railways.

Walking between the stalls where you can find anything that you could think of: seafood, fish, all types of seaweed, dried products (for example jellyfish), clothes and accessories, sex shops (with vending machines selling used underwear), electronics, etc.

All kinds of smells assault your senses on every corner mixed with the shouts of street vendors who advertise their products by shouting in Japanese.

In conclusion, it's a very charming area so it's really worth a visiting and eating in some of their restaurants.
