What happens when it suddenly snows in Tbilisi

The introduction

Hello everyone, I hope, that you are all doing just fine!

In this article, I want to tell you about this amazing day in Tbilisi and how snow came in winter at last! And, well, I will also tell you about all those things, that you might do when it’s snowing in Tbilisi and in Georgia, because there are certain things, that Georgians do on a snowy day and what they like to do on those days is just a great idea, I guess, so that you will see it below in the article.

You know, how I was complaining about not snowing on the New Year’s day and on Christmas and everything and how there was no feeling of those holidays among the people and how it was all sunny around and stuff. Well, the snow still came and, while it was a little too late, it still made us happy , I guess, because we were kind of looking forward to snowing, of course. You know, it’s always associated winter to snowing and stuff like that. Though, there has only been some winters, when it was snowing on New Year and Christmas and those years were more memorable for us, of course, then the other ones, where it was all sunny and freezing and you couldn’t really have that feeling of Christmas.

Snowing in Tbilisi

Well, they said, that it was going to snow, however, the weather was just fine the other day and I didn’t really believe that, because it was just a normal day and it was not very cold or anything, and, besides, the weather forecast is mostly wrong , if you want to know the truth. So, I just had those autumn stuff worn that day and I had to go outside and I had some stuff to do around the city and then I decided to go to my aunt’s home, though she was not there. It’s kind of high up on a hill, so that there’s always colder temperature there, ,of course, than in other places, however, it is nearby that building, where I go and exercise, so that I thought, that I would stay there that day and then I would go to the fitness center from there and that seemed to be a good plan, if you ask me. Besides, it had been quite some time that I was last there, so that I wanted to visit it and see how it was changed. Well, it was already kind of dark and it was pretty windy there, if you want to know the truth, so that I decided to go by bus and not get into any market, because the bus had this bus stop exactly in front of the building, so that I wouldn’t have to freeze outside walking up the hill with something that I would buy in a market. Well, I had some other things bought already, so that it wouldn’t be a problem. The bus number was 99and it’s the only bus that goes directly there and stops in front of my aunt’s apartment, so that it’s pretty cool, if you ask me.

So, I walked up to the apartment and got in there and just sat there and relaxed after that walking and stuff like that, you know. Soon it was time to sleep and I just slept, knowing, that the weather was not as bad as it seemed and I was pretty sure, that it wouldn’t be snowing the next day, or if it snowed, it probably wouldn’t be that much snow outside.

Well, I knew, that I had to wake up early in the morning, because I had to be in the fitness center at 11 o’clock, so that I was kind of planning on waking up at 9 a.m. or so. So that, when I woke up it was kind of cold in the room, though I had this heat turned on and everything. However, I didn’t really think of looking out of the window and started getting ready for going out. Then after some time, I just looked from the window and saw this whiteness outside. Everything was white and it seemed, that it had been snowing the whole night, otherwise it wouldn’t have been such high on the ground. And it was still snowing. And while it was pretty exciting, because it was the first time that it had ever snowed since October, and, well, it was not that snow in October , if you want to know the truth, and, besides, I was not in Tbilisi in October to see that snow, it still was not that good, because I didn’t really have winter clothes with me, I mean, the things, that you need to wear in snow, however, I could not do anything else, of course, but to just wear them and get to my home, where I could have a hot  drink and warmer clothes. Well, you don’t really need warmer clothes at home, but, still. You know how it is, the snowing is associated with sitting at home nearby the window, looking out of it and drinking hot chocolate or something like that. That’s pretty cool, if you ask me. Maybe you will also have a book in your hands and read it while doing all those stuff together. Usually, that doesn’t really gets to be done, I guess, because, once you get home, you just sit there and watch something on TV or in your laptop, or you might just go outside and hang around with your friends, though this time, you are not outside, but still somewhere inside, eating or drinking. I remember, in our childhood, we used to love being outside, making snowmen and throwing snowballsat each other and everything. Well, this time the snow was not that much , however, one could still make some snowmen and everything.

So, what could I do? I put on my clothes and went outside on a balcony. It seemed, that it was pretty cold, however, not as freezing, as I expected, I guess. There was still snow on the roads and it was kind of frozen, too, so that my shoes were slipping and I was walking really slowly, therefore. Of course, I didn’t want to fall somewhere and that’s why I was really careful, because my shoes were not supposed to be worn in the snow. And, as I’ve already mentioned, I was up on a hill, so that going down from there was pretty much a difficult task and I just wanted to get to the bus station, so that I could catch a bus and that would be it. However, when I got to the bus station I just caught a glance of that bus and it just went away, so that I was just a second late and missed it and now I could do nothing but to wait for some transport to come so that I could get on it and be in the fitness center on time. Well, there was this microbus number 58coming and I got onto it and went to the fitness center. Although, it didn’t directly went there, I had to stop it on a street parallel up to the street where the fitness center is, so that this time I had to go down on a hill, too, however, I was lucky, that there was not much snow there and I could walk a little bit faster there, I mean, of course, there was some snow on the lane and stuff like that, but still, it was a lot more easier to walk there than on the Plateau hills. When I thought, that finally I was out of the woods, I started walking on the stairs to fitness center and that was when I slipped and nearly fell down, but luckily I hold on to that thing and stayed alive!

What to do when it’s snowing in Tbilisi

Well, when it’s snowing in Tbilisi there are some options, that you might want to do. First of all, it never snows in Tbilisi so much, that the transport stops working or things like that, so that you need not to worry about that.

If you want ot have some fun and have some big snow, you can go to Tskneti, which is just nearby, in like outskirts of Tbilisi and it is pretty cool there. If any of your friends have a house there, you should definitely hit Tskneti and have some fun there.

Also, you can go to Betania and ski there, if you are up to skiing, because there is a pretty good skiing place there and people go there when it’s snow and enjoy themselves. However, I must say, that I haven’t been there, so that I really don’t know what it’s like and I can’t really tell you whether or not you should go there, but looking at the amount of people going there, you should really consider Betania for skiing, especially if you want to go somewhere nearby and not in Gudauri or Bakuriani, which are pretty cool, too, however, they are not that close to Tbilisi. Well, if you want to , you can always get to Bakuriani or Gudauri as there are always some tours for that and people pay something like 15 or 20 larisand go there and ski and snowboard and have fun together.

Well, the very first thing, that many people have in mind while it’s snowing outside, is that they can go to a supermarket or a chop-shop or whatever and have some pork bought and chopped and taken somewhere in nature or at someone’s home, where there’s a fireplace or something like that and they like having Mtsvadi with some wine and hanging around and everything. That’s pretty good, if you ask me. There’s nothing like preparing Mtsvadi outside in a snowand it’s like a very popular thing to do at that time and anytime else, too, especially if you are in Kakheti or someone amongst your friends is from Kakheti, they will just adore Mtsvadi and want to have it ini that snowy weather. It’s like you are freezing outside, however, there you have some fire outside for that Mtsvadi and you get warm there and at the same time, you just talk with your friends and have fun and prepare Mtsvadi and have some wine or maybe some vodka there and some Shoti bread and it’s really cool.

Back in those days

It doesn’t usually snow much in Tbilisi, if you want to know the truth, so that it’s not that of a big deal, I mean, of course, it’s a big deal, because it doesn’t snow often in Tbilisi, especially that much, that it’s snow around and you can feel it beneath your feet, however, there’s usually only melted snow around and you can’t  really enjoy it and that’s why when it snows, people don’t really like it. There are just some random cases of some good snow in Tbilisi, I guess, and that’s when people really like it. Children love the snow, of course, and they want to go outside and play in that snow and it is really great at that time, because if you want to know the truth, you can just go down to that yard and call your friends in the apartments and tell them to come down and play in the snow. That’s the most enjoyable part of the snow, I guess. It’s really great feeling to get all frozen in the snow and then, when you go home and get there to the heater and your hands are getting burnt and stuff like that. I remember those things pretty clearly. Though, we were in this big house in Kakheti that time and there were no apartments and calling to your friends. Everyone was already outside and there we had this great snow, not like in Tbilisi and there were children playing and slipping and everything. The very essential thing was to build a snowman and have your own snowman in the house and one in the street and, well, the more snowmen you had built, the better it was. It was like a competition of how many snowmen you could build. And when it snowed, you could usually make many snowmen, as the snow was more than enough and you could easily do them. However, when the ball got bigger and bigger it was harder to carry it to the destined place and then was when the parents and elders came in and helped us out and helped us carry those snowballs to those places where we wanted them to be. Usually the snowmen needed 3 balls, of course, one for the belly and the other one for the upper part and the other _ the smallest one for the head. We didn’t usually use carrot as its nose, rather, we used those black pieces of burnt wood and some tree  pieces for the hands and eyebrows and, well, the snowmen were built that way. We could even modify some pieces of it, so that they looked more lovely, I mean, we could put some hat and scarf on them and things like that.
