Why did you choose to go to Tarragona, Spain?

I have always been attracted to Spanish culture, and thought it would provide me with the ideal opportunity to learn the language.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I was in Tarragona for roughly 4/5 months, and was very well funded through government Erasmus grants. Overall, I was provided with enough money to live very comfortably, travel, and enjoy myself.

What is the student lifestyle like in Tarragona?

Great, particularly among the Erasmus students. It's difficult to socialise a lot with Spanish students as they tend to live outside the city, but there was a lively social life among the Erasmus students and regular activities/trips together.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Tarragona to other students?

Yes. It's small enough to get to know well, and big enough to remain interesting.

What is the food like?

Really good if you know where to go. Most of the best places are hidden down small streets and alleys in the old town. I'd recommend making friends with a local to show you the best places.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Tarragona?

No, it was easy. You have a lot of help finding a place and once you're there you learn of places through word of mouth.

How much does it cost to live in Tarragona?

About half the price of living in England.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

I was given the option of having Spanish lessons as part of my course, which I thoroughly recommend, and a Catalan course was compulsory. I quickly picked up enough to get by, as did all my friends.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Tarragona from your city?

Ryan air from Stansted to Reus. 20 minute bus from Reus Airport to Tarragona, departing every half hour or so.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Tarragona?

Head down to the marina for a big night. Stay in the old town otherwise. My favourite nights were outside the bars and cafes in Placa de la Font. El Cau is a good bar/club in the old town.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Tarragona?

The only one I can remember the name of is Istanbul, an authentic Turkish kebab house/tea room near Placa de la Font. Much better than it sounds.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

There are plenty of Roman ruins etc. around, but the best culture is in the old town.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Tarragona in the future?

Try and make friends with a few locals. The best thing I did was privately tutor a Spanish teenager. Not only was it great fun and a good money earner, it helped me integrate within the culture and find places that I wouldn't have been able to otherwise.
