Erasmus Experience in Tarragona, Spain by Clinique
Why did you choose to go to Tarragona, Spain?
Tarragona was not my first choice, but my university recommended it. And I have to say I'm glad I came here. The people are really nice and welcoming especially when they see you are trying to learn the language. But beware, Catalán is the mother tongue and they prefer it over Spanish. The culture and buildings are vibrant and everywhere. There are tons of things to do in Tarragona, but if you get tired of it, Barcelona is only an hour train ride away along with other cities that are good for shopping and site seeing. And every weekend there are parties to go to.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I receive a stipend of 600 euros per month as I paid a large amount to come here. This amount is sufficient enough to cover rent, food, and necessities. And I have enough left over to do some travelling; depending on where I want to go.
What is the student lifestyle like in Tarragona?
The student lifestyle here is pretty typical. You have class, you have school work and assignments, you party with friends, and you sleep. But as an Erasmus student less is expected of you in class. A good bit of Erasmus students skip class often. Some professors try to make it easier for Erasmus students if they happen to be in one of the Spanish or Catalán taught classes.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Tarragona to other students?
Absolutely. It is a great city and even though the International Center is sometimes useless, eventually you get what you need from them.
What is the food like?
The food is typical of places in the Mediterranean with a mixture of Chinese, American, Moroccan, and Turkish foods. You will also find foods only found in Catalonia.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Tarragona?
No. I joined a couple of Erasmus groups in Tarragona on Facebook and was able to find accommodation for myself fairly easily.
How much does it cost to live in Tarragona?
I would say between 300-800 euros depending on preference and what you like to do.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
It depends on your mother tongue. People who spoke one or more of the romance languages found it more easy to learn Catalán and Spanish. And yes there are language courses offered. Catalan is free, but Spanish is not,
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Tarragona from your city?
I am from the United States so by plane then train or bus is easiest.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Tarragona?
There are a number of clubs/bars that cater to students and sometimes Erasmus students specifically.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Tarragona?
Cappuccino and 100 Montaditos.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
El point del Diablo.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Tarragona in the future?
Be flexible and patient. Be open to meeting new people and trying things that you never have before.
