Working Experience in Tampere, Finland by Giovanni
Why did you choose to go to Tampere, Finland?
Due to great job opportunities, very high internship salaries compared to the Southern European countries.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
My salary was largely enough to pay for the rent of the flat, fee and for the weekly entertainments.
What is the student lifestyle like in Tampere?
Even if I was there as a worker, I was able to take part at some students life: university parties, students clubbing nights...
Would you recommend the city and the University of Tampere to other students?
Yes, I really would like to recommend this city and university as well.
What is the food like?
International. If you are a really difficult person in term of food, you can easily find (almost) everything you want. Something it might be a little bit more expensive than in other countries.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Tampere?
Yes, a bit, but because I was not going there as a student but as a worker.
How much does it cost to live in Tampere?
I would consider that costs are around 1000 € per month. In addition rent fees included.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Finnish is really difficult. By the way, everybody speaks English fluently. Other languages quite well known as: Spanish, German and French.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Tampere from your city?
By plane via Helsinki or Stockholm. Other good option might be travel by a low cost carrier from Bergamo directly to Tampere airport.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Tampere?
Good pubs/clubs are in Haamenkatu or next to Sokos Ilves Hotel (Miami Disco Club).
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Tampere?
I would recommend a great typical Finnish restaurant in Haamenkatu (close to Sokos Department store). Other good "ravintola" which means restaurant is located on the top of Nasinuela TV Tower, just next to the amusement park.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Pyynnikki Tower and related park is a must be. Sunday's market next to the canal is something like cultural attraction that you have to visit, including eating there the traditional Tampereen black sausages.
Every foreigner should go to a sauna by the lake and enjoying the traditional culture.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Tampere in the future?
Bring with you very different kind of clothes! Especially during summer time weather can change quickly! Today is raining with 10°C while tomorrow is sunny with almost 30 °C.
