What is the student lifestyle like in Tallinn?

Relaxed and many activities to take part in.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Tallinn to other students?

Yes.

What is the food like?

Estonian cuisine is not super special, however there are many great restaurants with food from all over the world to be found in town.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Tallinn?

Started looking quite late, found a lot that required me to get a contract of at least a year. But found my accommodation rather quickly, I think.

How much does it cost to live in Tallinn?

Depends greatly on what you plan on doing, but in general life is not super expensive here.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

University offered a three week language course in the summer, which I was not able to take part in. Don't speak any of the language, but they speak relatively proper English here (although you of course do learn some small things when living here).

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Tallinn from your city?

Ryanair flight from Düsseldorf Weeze airport (western Germany, right next to the Dutch border).

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Tallinn?

Club Mynt on Wednesday (entrance of 8 euros, but suuuper cheap drinks), Club Hollywood on Friday/Saturday (often free entrance when you indicate 'going' on their Facebook event). But there are maaany more bars and clubs in the old town.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Tallinn?

  • Restaurant Platz
  • Estonian Burger Factory
  • Ancho (Mexican)
  • St. Patrick's (pretty cheap)
  • Kvartal
  • Chopsticks (good and cheap lunch take away)
  • Kompressor (cheap and great pancakes)

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Just the old town in general is very beautiful. Kadriorg park (and palace) is worth a visit. Many museums. Also (not in the middle of the winter, but when the weather is still nice), the island Naissaar is a nice place to visit.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Tallinn in the future?

It is relatively easy and cheap to reach other cities from here (Tartu, Riga, Vilnius, St. Petersburg) by bus, through Ecolines or LuxExpress. If you have a chance to book tickets with a discount, you can go for as little as 5 euros per trip (depends on destination of course, but still). Just in general, the 'inter city' bus connections are great, and on these buses you can watch movies and there is Wi-Fi.

Don't be scared by the cold weather, it's not that bad. And public transportation is good and free (with Estonian ID card), so you can always take the bus or tram.

I would say try to get a place in the city centre of Tallinn, whether it is in the academic hostel Endla 4 or something else. I reckon that you will not see much more than the university campus if you're located there, especially during winter when you don't want to go outside as much.

City connection to university is about 25 minutes, the bus stops right in front of the university. There is so much to see and experience in the city centre, and also most parties take place in the old town. Saves you Uber/Taxi trips back to the campus.
