Experience in Tallinn, Estonia by Sirelin
What is it like to live in Tallinn? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I would recommend it a lot, there is always something to do. Tallinn has a lot of different districts I would say, and the biggest community is the hipster and Kalamaja community which is seen in northers parts of Tallinn mostly.
What is the student lifestyle like in Tallinn?
Depending on which school you are studying, the lifestyle is very different. In TTÜ there is a whole complex surrounded by nature and woods but it is out of the city centre, whereas Tallinn University is located in the city centre and the school itself has a lot of facilities (movies etc... ). Universities also host a lot of parties and festivals for students (as well as Olympics in the Winter and Summer).
How much does it cost to live in Tallinn?
For non-working students it can get expensive depending on what you are used to. A lunch at school is usually 3 euros. From a vegetarian experience I can say that near the school there are several places to get only plant-based foods and mostly it is cheaper than the meat options.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Tallinn? Is there any advice you can give?
Students are offered dorms which are usually up to 100 euros a month (2 people in one room). Apartments in Tallinn are quite expensive (starting from 200 plus taxes- cheaper ones are usually far from the city centre).
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food is good, also depending what you are used to eating. I personally really like the hipster region because there are the best vegan and vegetarian options.
What places would you recommend visiting in Tallinn?
Definitely the old town, Pirita beach and Linnahall are the places to see. Also, as I already mentioned the hipster and Kalamaja region.
Is it good to eat out in Tallinn? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
I usually visit different new restaurants in Kalamaja and telliskivi region. But my favourite is this gluten free place -Kivi Paber Käärid (translation: rock paper scissors).
Is the nightlife good in Tallinn? Where is good to go?
Personally, I don't attend clubs a lot but there are a ton of them in the city centre and the old town has a lot of cool pubs. Often universities have their own parties in those pubs.
What advice would you give future students heading to Tallinn?
I recommend visiting a lot of places and not only get stuck in the city centre. You should start chilling in the old town and will probably meet some cool people to hang out with.
