Experience in Tallinn, Estonia by Aleksandra
What is it like to live in Tallinn? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Tallinn is an amazing city. It is very old and medieval. It is very calm and quiet to live there. You don't have to rush, hurry up or run somewhere. It is very comfortable because everything is situated close to each other.
What is the student lifestyle like in Tallinn?
Actually I have never studied at the University in Tallinn, so I can't judge. But according to the experience that my friends have and that of the coming Erasmus students, it is very interesting and it is not like the student life in other countries, it's something totally different.
How much does it cost to live in Tallinn?
Nowadays, as we also do use euro currency, the prices are pretty much the same as in the rest of Europe. I guess some 500 euros is enough for a student living in Tallinn (maybe even including the rent).
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Tallinn? Is there any advice you can give?
No, it's pretty easy. I would reccomend those apartments situated in the Old Town of Tallinn. So that you can save money on transport. And it is obviously the most beautiful part of the city.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
We have a number of restaurants that offer the traditional cousine of different world countries, so everyone will find something, according to his taste. My favourite dish is Bloody saussage with sourcraft, sprat, bread soup and cooked semolina in sweet syrop. Mmm...delicious! The traditional cousine!
What places would you recommend visiting in Tallinn?
The whole Old Town of Tallinn. It is beautiful! Then the coastal district called Pirita is lovely. And then it is also possible to go to the other Estonian cities.
Is it good to eat out in Tallinn? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes, it is nice. There is an Italian chain of restaurants called Vapiano. And there is also a recently open Italian restaurant called Olivia.
Is the nightlife good in Tallinn? Where is good to go?
It is not so diverse, but it is okay. Hollywood, Cathouse and Prive.
What advice would you give future students headed to Tallinn?
Be prepared for the cold winters and take the warmest Syberian clothes with you!
