Erasmus Experience in Tallinn, Estonia by Marco
Why did you choose to go to Tallinn, Estonia?
Because I would like to see countries in the north of Europe, as I'm living in Italy. From there I went to Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland and Sweden but if you want you can go to Norway and Denmark as well easily. For the currency because they have euros too.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The scolarship was for 5 months and I received around 250 euros per month. Money depends on who you are and what you do. You will be an Erasmus, this will be one of the best experience in your life so don't lock yourself in a room, go out, enjoy the time with people you've never seen, visit places you just may have seen on the internet, party hard.
What is the student lifestyle like in Tallinn?
I was in TTÜ University. Had 6 classes, all of them, compared to the Italian ones, were really interesting and motivating. All the professors were always in their office if you need them to talk about lessons or homework. If you go always to lessons and study a bit you can pass the exams easily otherwise you can fail, the fact you are an Erasmus is not influent.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Tallinn to other students?
Yes sure! You will never regret this decision. I wish I could stay more!
What is the food like?
Vodka, vodka, vodka! Just kidding... you can find everything you want but you should try typical dishes like blood sausages or sült.
Sült
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Tallinn?
Nope, because I have just sent the application to the University and they sent that to the Academic Hostel that is for Erasmus student. Not so many places but if you apply soon, you have your place for sure.
How much does it cost to live in Tallinn?
It's totally up to you but less than almost all the European countries.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?
Estonian is totally hard to learn and speak but everyone speak English so no problem.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Tallinn from your city?
Book soon and you will have cheaper flight otherwise can cost a lot.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Tallinn?
Once you will be here everyone will tell you to go to Nimeta. It's not a normal pub it's the way to live Tallinn's nights as an Erasmus.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Tallinn?
There are a lot of Italian restaurant, I could suggest Pulcinella and Osteria di Bacco.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The Old Town with its walls and tower is just astonishing.
Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to Tallinn?
If you go during the winter time like I did bring with you a very good coat... temperatures go down, really down.
