Experience in Sydney, Australia by Socrates
What is it like to live in Sydney? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Very multicultural.
What is the student lifestyle like in Sydney?
Fun! There's plenty to do in Sydney.
How much does it cost to live in Sydney?
A LOT!
The rent for a 2-bedroom apartment is $380 per week! Usually shared accommodation is around $250.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Sydney? Is there any advice you can give?
No, but it's expensive.
Choose to live in suburbs further from the city centre, like Liverpool, Cabramatta, Campbelltown, Auburn, Parramatta, Merrylands, Guildford. They're all 30-40 minutes from the centre but public transport is quick.
What is the food like? What are your favorite dishes?
There are all types of food: sushi, Indian, Thai, Lebanese, Persian...
My favourite is Thai.
What places would you recommend visiting in Sydney?
I would recommend going to the night clubs, to Newtown, to the Blue Mountains.
If you want to experience the bush, book yourself a retreat (on a donation basis) at the spiritual healing centre Brahma Kumaris, in Luera. There are weekend retreats.
Is it good to eat out in Sydney? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes, they are:
- Frankies, in the city center
- Thai Padthong, in Newtown
- Sushi Bay, several locations
Is the nightlife good in Sydney? Where is good to go?
- In the city centre: Ivy Nightclub, Marque, Pontoon
- Gay night clubs: ARQ and all of Oxford Street
- Western Sydney (Parramatta): P. J. Gallagher's, Albion
What advice would you give future students heading to Sydney?
There are no wild animals or kangaroos in the middle of Sydney.
Violence: stay away from Rooty hill and Bankstown
