Experience in Stockholm, Sweden by Artur
What is it like to live in Stockholm? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
If you have the chance, for sure it would be a good experience to live some time in Stockholm. The city has a lot of green territory and water. Downtown is really nice, very charming architecture without endless skyscrapers.
What is the student lifestyle like in Stockholm?
There are a lot of international students in Stockholm and most of them are happy to meet new people. So if you're studying in Stockholm you'll definitely meet many interesting people. However, it is difficult to get new friends in Sweden.
There are very active student unions in Stockholm and during the year they organize a lot of parties and other activities for students.
How much does it cost to live in Stockholm?
With 1000 euros/month it is possible to live a normal student life (including going out several times).
Rent for a single room in a university dorm will cost 300-400 euros, depends on the conditions.
Transportation card is expensive, 150 euros (student price) for 3 months SL card, but it is very very useful.
Groceries are not cheap, but also not extremely expensive and for fruits and vegetables, they have open-air markets where prices are slightly cheaper than in supermarkets.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Stockholm? Is there any advice you can give?
Yes, it is difficult to find an accommodation in Stockholm. So if your university offers you a dorm, it is better to accept it, even if it is not so close to the campus. In general, all the suburbs of Stockholm are well connected to the downtown with metro or commuter train lines.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I didn't really try national dishes... they have meatballs which I don't like. I am not really aware of their cuisine. But you always can buy very tasty salmon to eat.
Is it good to eat out in Stockholm? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Eating out is not cheap in Stockholm. For students, it might be more affordable to eat at university restaurants, which usually have discounts for students. Also, there are many buffet places during the lunchtime, where for 100 SEK, you can eat as much as you want.
Also, there is a pub Hellströms, where every Friday you can have a beer and nacho buffet for 55 SEK.
There is also one restaurant in Stockholm, which is expensive but worth to visit. It is called AIFUR, the place is surrounded by Vikings atmosphere and they serve real Vikings food.
Is the nightlife good in Stockholm? Where is good to go?
Most of the bars in Stockholm are closed at 3 am, so there are not many places to party all the night. Also as alcohol in Sweden is very expensive, especially in bars, students prefer to drink in advance and then go for partying.
