Experience in Split, Croatia by Vladimir
What is it like to live in Split? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
First of all, I was born in Metkovic, small town in southern Croatia. I moved to Split in 2010. So, this is my 4th year in Split. Life in Split is wonderful, in my opinion. I would recommend it to everyone. Split is not that big city, you can learn all about it in a few months, but Split will always find the way to surprise you. City centre is most beautiful part of the world. If you don't believe me, just Google it :)
What is the student lifestyle like in Split?
Student lifestyle in Split is good. Most of it happens in Campus which is kinda "new city centre" and in Spinut (there are two dorms - Bruno Bušić and Hostel Spinut). If you're good student you'll probably hang out in University library a lot, which is placed in Campus. As I figured it out by now, incoming Erasmus students party a lot here, so, you shouldn't hesitate to come here if you're that type of guy/girl. It's not that expensive to be a student here and it's kinda fun if you want it to be. There is a lot to discover, I'm sure you'll like it.
How much does it cost to live in Split?
Dorms aren't so expensive (~100 €), food is cheap if you eat in "Menza" (canteen; one meal costs 6, 50kn+ which is less the 1 €, and it is decent meal. There is canteen in almost every faculty and every dorm). If you decide to live somewhere else (flat, room, etc. ) it might cost you from 200€ to God knows how much. If you ask me, it's much better to live in dorms (my choice would be Hostel Spinut - you can meet local students, and also there is a lot of partying going in "Bruno Bušić", dorm next to Hostel Spinut) and it's a lot cheaper.
Alcohol is also not so expensive in markets and stores, and in clubs you'll pay one beer ~2€.
You can get monthly ticket for buses for less than 10€.
To sum up, it's not so expensive to live here as a student.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Split? Is there any advice you can give?
It's not hard to find it. If you don't want to live in dorms, you can find accommodation on njuskalo.hr. But, be careful, local people will try to get as much money as they can from you. If you live with 2 other people in a flat, you shouldn't pay it more than 1200kn each (less than 200€), if you do, you're probably over paying it, imo.
But, as I said, it's probably the best choice to live in dorms. I've been living in "Bruno Bušić" for last 4 years and it's great. It's cheap and there is so many young people. But this is just my opinion.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food in Croatia is great. We eat a lot mediterranean food here in Split, you should try, but also balkanian food is something you should try as well (sarma, chevapi, burek... ). Food in Menzas (Canteens) is ok, not great, but it's cheap, so, there you go :D
What places would you recommend visiting in Split?
You should visit city centre (Diocletian palace, Riva, Prokurative, Cathedral of St. Duje... ), Park forest Marjan, Bačvice beach, Žnjan beach, Obojena Beach, Matejuška, Hajduk's stadium Poljud (Hajduk vs Dinamo is always exciting), there is also a lot of museums...
Also, you should visit Trogir, Omiš, maybe some islands (Šolta, Brač, Hvar, Vis... ).
There is so much to visit here :)
Is it good to eat out in Split? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
I don't usually eat out simply because it's kinda expensive for me, and there is Menza :D
But, there are a few good places - Imperium, Fifa, Velo misto, Cukarin... It's not that expensive, don't get me wrong, so, you should definitely try some of those places.
Is the nightlife good in Split? Where is good to go?
Night life in Split is good. There is a lot of places where you can go, all depends of what kind of music you like. My favourite clubs are Quasimodo and O'Hara, but there are also : Vanilla, Plava Kava, Tropic, Klub Baće, Kauri, Kocka, Kameleon... There is something for everyone. Summer in Split is great if we discuss nightlife, much better than winter. There is Ultra Europe fest in July, which is huge event. Split is great in summertime.
What advice would you give future students headed to Split?
Split is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Spring and summer here are amazing. There is beautiful Adriatic sea, great people, beautiful women, good food and it's not too expensive. Come to Split, you'll like it :)
