Experience in Split, Croatia by Pingvin
What is it like to live in Split? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Split is a very sunny, very chill city. From about May to October it’s crazy there. There is not much to do in late January and February, but that’s when exams are. You can also go skiing nearby at Hercegovina. Regarding clubbing, at wintertime people go out mostly at Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. And of course bank holidays. Still, I currently prefer going out at wintertime because at summertime it gets very crowded.
What is the student lifestyle like in Split?
Chill, there are a lot of cafes, there are clubs, weather is nice even in wintertime mostly. Faculty for exchange students isn’t hard
How much does it cost to live in Split?
I’d say per person accommodation is on average 100 euros for a nice place near the uni, food is 200 per month if you cook, if
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Split? Is there any advice you can give?
I don’t think it’s hard at wintertime
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
My personal favourites are Soparnik and Bajadera. Cuisine is Mediterranean. We have student restaurants where we can eat really cheap with a student card because food is subsidised for us and the food is really good. i think Erasmus students usually eat with local students cards
What places would you recommend visiting in Split?
1700 years old Diocletian palace where people still live and there are a lot of restaurants and bars. As it is on a peninsula, Split wasn’t able to expand but there are a lot of smaller cities with as rich history- Salona, Klis, Trogir... you can still swim at October so definitely beaches (the best ones in my opinion are between Split and Omiš). Also the islands, there are a lot of beautiful islands in Dalmatia. Charming Mostar, if you love vineyards and gastronomy, Istria has a great offer. Dubrovnik of course is very popular and about 4 hours away by bus. Also there are a lot of spots where Game of Thrones was filmed in Dalmatia, including Split, Klis, Šibenik and of course Dubrovnik.
Is it good to eat out in Split? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
I like Corto Maltese and Pandora, Pomalo, Luka ice cream& cakes has the best homemade ice cream and after clubbing everyone is eating in Prerada or Mate krafne.
Is the nightlife good in Split? Where is good to go?
It’s great at summertime, good I’d say in wintertime, though there typically isn’t anything going on on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays(unless it is a bank holiday). Typically Erasmus students have a lot of home parties there.
What advice would you give future students heading to Split?
Lear how to sit and drink coffee, it is a ritual for us.
