My Erasmus experience in Sofia, Bulgaria, by Евдокия

How did you find living in Sofia? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

The city of Sofia isn't a great place to live at all. In my opinion it is the embodiment of misfortune and disgust. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone!

What is student life like in Sofia?

The students do not have good intentions, they are fierce and poisonous, don't do the work that the lecturers set and don't stop chatting and joking.

What is the cost of living like in Sofia?

It's generally not very expensive but that markets are very expensive. Up until a few years ago, there was an amusement park similar to Disneyland Paris. It was called Sofialand but the local authorities closed it with immediate effect. We still don't know why. I think this might have been the only place where you could have fun in Sofia.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Sofia? Any advice?

No, it's not at all difficult to find. There are lots of agencies that can put the locations of different things available on the internet. A simple search will provide you with the names of many agencies. The cost of sales and rent isn't high at all.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Unhealthy and not plentiful.

What do you recommend seeing in Sofia?

The suburbs: Mladost, Lulin, Drugba, Moderno predgradie, Suhata reka, Hadji Dimitar etc.

And to eat? Where are your favourite places?

There aren't any great places to eat in Sofia for tourists, unlike in Paris for example. It's actually often quite risky to eat out in Sofia because there are very few restaurants that have a nice atmosphere. But there are cockroaches...

Where do you recommend going out in Sofia?

Again, I'll highlight that Sofia is not like France or England where you can go out for a quiet walk. I feel no attachment to this city. There's something gloomy about it. The parks are like dirty ghost towns, particularly Borissovata Garden and the Parc du Sud.

Any advice to future Erasmus students in Sofia?

Only one thing - don't come to Sofia to live or study.
