Experience in Sofia, Bulgaria by Mike
What is it like to live in Sofia? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I haven't lived here for a long time, but my impression for the first month is really good actually. There's always something fun to do, the people look really sad but when you start talking to them they're all really nice and helpful. And if you like to see something else then the western land and buildings you should totally go to Sofia to taste a little bit of communism.
What is the student lifestyle like in Sofia?
There are very much good clubs in Sofia, of course the best ones are the most expensive, but also the cheaper clubs are really good! They play very nice music and (for the guys) almost all the girls are really beautiful. Also a lot of tourists come here and you can have a lot of fun with them. I don't know really about the rest of the student life, I heard the universities aren't really good and they use old, communist methods that won't learn you a lot. But like I said, that's just what I heard.
How much does it cost to live in Sofia?
You can get a room for 80-150 euros, a furnished apartment for 175-300 euros is realistic. For the rest everything you do outside your apartment isn't expensive, it costs like half of what you pay in western countries, even fastfood. A phone contract is like 12, 50 euros for 1000MB internet, 1000minutes and i don't know how much SMS. And internet/phone contracts are like 12, 50 euro's as well for 80 channels and 50 mbps internet.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Sofia? Is there any advice you can give?
No it's not hard at all. You should contact someone from iBroker and ask for Dimitar, he will help you really good.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is okay, just don't order pizzas and pasta when you're from Italy, it won't be like in your own country. But it's all really cheap and you should try out just anything.
What places would you recommend visiting in Sofia?
Just look for the free sofia tour on facebook and they will show you the best places in the center for free. But I guess that's all.
Is it good to eat out in Sofia? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Raffy's is REALLY good and Victoria is also a good place to eat. If you want to order something at home you could take a look at Amam.
Is the nightlife good in Sofia? Where is good to go?
IT'S AWESOME! You should go to NIGHT FLIGHT, Club Biad, Club 33, Club Passport, Club Bedroom, Yalta and if you like drum and bass you should definitely go to 4KM Partycenter.
What advice would you give future students heading to Sofia?
If you like to go partying and live outside your home you should definitely go, otherwise I wouldn't know why you should go here. Maybe for skiing but thats all.
