Experience in Sofia, Bulgaria by Elena
What is it like to live in Sofia? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It's nice to live in Sofia, especially in the areas around the center. I will recommed it because it's cheap compared to other european capitals.
What is the student lifestyle like in Sofia?
It depends on whether you are living in your own place or in student's dormitory. If you are in student's dormitory, it's not very cheerful experience, but if you are a party seeker you can always have fun in the Student's city (the name of the area where the dormotiries are positioned).
How much does it cost to live in Sofia?
Around 400 euro per month is ok.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Sofia? Is there any advice you can give?
Yes, it starts to be more difficult as people from other towns are coming to live here. But you can be always sure that there are a lot of appartement under rent in the new residential district close to Vitosha mountain called Manastriski livadi.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The Bulgarian cuisine is a mix of all types of balkan dishes. It's rich in proteins but also vegetarian friendly. Guvech is what I would recommend as a vegetarian.
What places would you recommend visiting in Sofia?
The new art gallery "Square 500".
Is it good to eat out in Sofia? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
I would recoomend "Mr. Pizza" and "Don Domat" if you want to have a nice pizza, and "Warsteiner" if you are feeling nostalgic towards good beer and rich in meat dishes.
Is the nightlife good in Sofia? Where is good to go?
It's pretty good, but I have nothing to recommend as I am not a fan of it.
What advice would you give future students heading to Sofia?
Watch your bags and don't ever take a taxi.
