Erasmus Experience in Sligo, Ireland, by Alberto
Why did you choose to go to Sligo, Ireland?
Because it is such a fecking good place, gud aul craic bucks!
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
It lasts 9 months. It was around 350 euro monthly I think, but not 100 % sure (Erasmus scholarship).
What is the student lifestyle like in Sligo?
Drink, girls! Now seriously, it is unreal. Not much to study, parties, good craic, most friendly and welcoming people I've ever seen... It is a tremendous spot as well for the nature lovers.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Sligo to other students?
Definetly. For me it was probably the best year of my life.
What is the food like?
Compared with the british standard is good. There're places like Hargadon's where the food is actually great and cheap. But in general don't expect too much, the eating habits in general are pretty shite.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Sligo?
Not really.
How much does it cost to live in Sligo?
Around 300 euro if you share an appartment with other 3/4 people... If you go for Yeat Village, Gateway, etc., 430 euro I reckon. My personal opinion, avoid them! They rip you off and they are far from town centre.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?
I suppose there're courses at the IT, but if you really want to improve just talk with the natives! They are really nice and friendly (not under the effect of the booze). The accent can be found strong, but after a while you get used to it. Now I even have Shhhligo accent.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Sligo from your city?
Plane plus bus.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Sligo?
It changes every year... Now I would say: McHugh's, Garavogue, Toffs...
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Sligo?
Hargadon's is the best. Then Belfry is good as well.
For a tea or coffee I recommend Osta (it is expensive, but it is worth it).
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Ben Bulben, Stranhill beach, Knocknarea, Rosses point, Lough gill, Mullaghmore, Glencar waterfall, Hazelwood forest... Advise: rent a car and get lost.
Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to Sligo?
Just go, flow and enjoy your stay here! Slainte!
