Why did you choose to go to Siena, Italy?

I choose this place for my Masters as it is the most peaceful place I have ever visited. The city is extremely safe, especially inside the walls and the areas near the gates.
There are a lot of students around the city and the locals are very helpful. Just a bit expensive for certain things.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I can manage my living expenses with approximately €300 per month including groceries and eating out. I mostly cook my meals at home.

What is the student lifestyle like in Siena?

The student life is pretty exciting especially for Erasmus students, as there are on going activities every month apart from the curriculum. Students are also entitled to discounts in some cafeterias and and historical sites using their University ID.

Yes i highly recommend this place for students who prefer a calm, peaceful and relaxed atmosphere during their stay.

What is the food like?

Tuscany is mostly know for its food. The Pizzerias are a must try, followed by the gelatos, pastries, and the famous local dessert ricciarelli. I also loved some kebab places and Chinese here.

I did the booking of my accommodation via housing anywhere. So it was much easier.

Depends on the individual's need. If you home meals then its relatively cheaper, otherwise around €400-500.

Yes the language is easy to learn. University of Siena has an agreement with University of Foreigners, to offer Italian and other language courses to foreign students at an affordable cost. There are other approved language schools too, but are a bit expensive.

The closest and cheapest city to reach Siena from is Florence. There are buses and trains available every hour from the Florence airport. Other popular places to arrive from are Pisa and Rome.

The most famous for a night is the Piazza del Campo, as it has many good bars and restaurants around.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Siena?

Some of the places I tried and liked are Pomodorino, Turkish kebab place (Via Camollia), Osteria il Vinaio di Bobbe e Davide (via Camollia), Buti Cafe, Bar Osteria Il Bargello (Via di citta), Paolai tapas bar (via Simone Martini).

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Duomo Di Siena, The Local Museum, Saint Catherine of Siena and Basilica of Saint Francesco.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Siena in the future?

Pack your suitcase with darker colours for the winters and lighter shades for the summer, also get a MENSA card from university for cheaper meals at cafeteria and to socialise. Watch out for sales in the town centre for shopping at lower rates. Book accommodations that have flexible timings since most places by 7.30pm. Buy bus tickets in bulk at cheaper rates from Piazza Gramsci.
