Experience in Siena, Italy by Simona
What is it like to live in Siena? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I've been living in Siena for 3 months as an University student. I had such a great time there since I met a lot of wonderful people. The city is small but I think that it is perfect for a student, since it allows you to easily reach any part of it. In the last years more and more foreigners are coming Siena, which is a great opportunity to improve your language skills. Siena is the typical Medieval city. You will enjoy a walk along the narrow streets of the city, tasting an ice-cream. But watch out! Remember your umbrella, since the weather is often unstable and you will find yourself in the middle of the street taking a shower!
What is the student lifestyle like in Siena?
Although it is not a big city, students can enjoy the nightlife. Several parties are arranged during the week, especially from Wednesday until Saturday. The local ESN always arranges something interesting and offers the opportunity to meet people from any part of the world. Anyway, you will also appreciate a dinner at your friends, when the weather will not allow you to go out. (remember that not every neighbours appreciate noises! )
How much does it cost to live in Siena?
It is about 400€ per month, considering the price of a single room+ bills.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Siena? Is there any advice you can give?
NO it is isn't. I'd advice you just to be careful with contracts and the condition of the house, so that you will not find yourself in trouble if something goes wrong.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I think that one of the best dishes is "Pici cacio e pepe", a typical kind of pasta. Anyway, if you have just finished your afternoon courses at Uni and you do not feel like cooking and spending a lot of money on it, just buy a "ciaccino", which can contain different ingredients.
What places would you recommend visiting in Siena?
First of all, you should see the main places in the city centre, such as the Duomo. I also love the narrow streets of the city which allow you to always discover new parts of it. So just take a map and have a walk around the city centre.
Is it good to eat out in Siena? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Together with my friends we often went to San Paolo, near Piazza Il Campo, or have an aperitivo at Cacio e Pere, Conad e dintorni, La Favorita. I also liked Il Vinaio, La Piana or Fonte Giusta where to eat something typical or you can try the wonderful pizza of Il Pomodorino.
Is the nightlife good in Siena? Where is good to go?
There are different parties, just a look around and take something to drink with your friends. You will always meet new people.
What advice would you give future students heading to Siena?
Do appreciate even the smallest details of your period there, even the rainy days, although you hate them. You will miss every single aspect of your life in this small but lovely city.
