Experience in Sevilla, Spain by Laura

What is it like to live in Seville? Would you recommend it? How is it?

Of course I'd recommend it, as you already know, Seville is something special and that's no joke. My favourite thing about the city is its size, it's not too big nor too small. If you like the sun, a warm climate and beer, this is the city for you. Here, people don't stay inside, but instead go to outside bars, to the park or to the riverbank, one of my favourite spots. Seville is a place to enjoy the outdoors. The best season here is spring when everything smells of blossom, so yes, you will fall in love with this place.

What is the student lifestyle like in Seville?

One thing is certain, Seville isn't a typical student city like Granada, Salamanca... but there are lots of places where students meet up, especially Erasmus ones.

There is a student atmosphere, although a lot of students come from nearby towns, so they come and go back there each day, as Seville is well connected to these towns. This is one of the negatives, as a lot of my classmates came from these towns, although there are always other options so that you can go on a night out.

How much does it cost to live in Seville?

It isn't very expensive, the average rent is around 200 euros. Although you can find cheaper or more expensive places depending on what you're looking for, if you want a "good flat", which is completely furnished, with electrical appliances and everything that you need and in a good location, this is the kind of thing that costs around 200 euros.

Did you have trouble finding accommodation in Seville? Do you have any advice?

As I said before, Seville isn't too big or too small. Thus, I didn't have many problems finding accommodation. It is true that certain faculties are located further away, like those in Cartuja. Normally people look for a flat in Triana, which is a typical Andalusian street, pretty and fairly close-by to everything, and although the easiest and hassle-free thing to do is to take a bus to class, you could also walk there or take a bike. Although you won't be able to walk to the Pablo de Olavide University, or the "UPO". The rest of the campus is in a good location, so you can find flats really close-by to your faculty. I study in the Viapol campus and it takes me 10 minutes to get there, which is a fair journey, so you can find flats closer by.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is good, you can find everything. My favourite dish is salmorejo with ham.

What places would you recommend visiting in Seville?

The usual ones but they are incredible. The Cathedral (you have to go up the Giralda - the bell tower), Alcahazar, and definitely the gardens. The Plaza de España, take out a little boat and have an explore. The Triana Bridge and all of that street. A walk along the river bank...

Is it good to eat out in Seville? What are some of your favourite places to go?

There is so much choice. In front of the rectorate, you can find bars and restaurants which are affordable with lovely views.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Seville?

It depends if you want a club or a more relaxed vibe. In terms of partying, you can drink in the street in Chile, which is a street near the club, which shares the same name, which is full of students. There are lots of clubs in Seville (Antique, Kudeta, Teatre... ) and the usual areas to grab a beer and have a chat are Alfalfa and Alameda. There is also the street Betis, a bar called Rio Latino which is quite good, but basically, you have a lot of choices.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Seville in the future?

Enjoy the sunshine, be open-minded and sociable because you are going to meet some incredible people. And one thing, don't forget to study, university is quite hard, but you're always going to have enough time to do everything!
