Experience in Sevilla, Spain by Cassandra
What is it like to live in Sevilla? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
The city is amazing for its culture and historical beauty. It's equally a great place to live as you can find somewhere if you're on a tight budget! The city is big and a little confusing at first but the more you look around the more you will find not only the cheaper and more local places to go such as cafés and tapas bars but also some lovely hidden gems. Looking online I found places for cute little internet cafés tucked away in little hidden streets away from the tourists and some brilliant vinyl shops!
What is the student lifestyle like in Sevilla?
I couldn't tell you that since I'm not a student. I am on my year abroad with University but I work for the British Council as an Auxiliary.
How much does it cost to live in Sevilla?
It depends where you live. City center you're looking anywhere between 300 at the cheapest and higher. Outside of the city center is extremely affordable. I live in Montequinto and only pay 250 euros in rent, all inclusive!
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Sevilla? Is there any advice you can give?
My advice is if you choose to look when you arrive, make sure you:
- See the flat before signing contracts! There are always false pictures online so make sure you look first and know what you're getting yourself into!
- If you're not great at Spanish, make yourself a list of questions before you go so you know what you need to know and you don't leave thinking, oh I should have asked this and that, or oh how do you say this... etc
- There are flyers everywhere around the city center so it's a great place to look as well!
- Airbnb.com is a brilliant site where you can find cheap holiday flats for up to three weeks.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is great though if you pay more than 2 euro for a small tapas dish... you're in the wrong bar! They're for tourists and cost more than necessary. Find the local places where the locals go. You'll be paying very little for great food.
What places would you recommend visiting in Sevilla?
Definitely:
- the Cathedral (under 25 and with student card you get in for 4 euros) and it includes a trip up the Giralda where you can see all of Seville and further.
- The Plaza de Toros is wonderful too and you get a Tour in both English and Spanish.
- Plaza de Hércules is also brilliant for its night life, cheap bars and cafés.
- Visit the beautiful parks and obviously Plaza de España where you can take boat rides around the whole place (on your own! ).
Is it good to eat out in Sevilla? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It is very good though my favourite spots are in Montequinto where I live. They're very locally type places. Personally I recommend anywhere outside of the city center as it's cheaper.
Is the nightlife good in Sevilla? Where is good to go?
I don't know. I'm not a night life type of person.
What advice would you give future students heading to Sevilla?
Just don't panic, have fun and always secure your belongings when you're out and about. Avoid the ladies who give out these little branches (they're gypsies and try to trick you into hand readings and giving them money). Make sure you have a camera and take every opportunity to go travelling!
