Experience in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina by Nejra
What is it like to live in Sarajevo? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Sarajevo is my hometown, but I'll try to write objectively.
It is small but very beautiful city with a very rich culture and historical background. People are extremely nice and friendly, so it's not difficult to make friendships. They are always up to partying until early in the morning, or just cozy evenings that they like spend in beautiful bars drinking cocktails or coffees at which point we have obsession.
What is the student lifestyle like in Sarajevo?
It is very interesting. We cannot imagine a day without having 2-3 coffees spent with our friends, just gossiping about random things. There are specific days for partying. Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday are the best. Fridays are a bit boring for all-night-partying. It depends on what you prefer, a calm evening at a coffee shop or bar/pub with some live rock, pop, jazz music or partying hard in the club.
How much does it cost to live in Sarajevo?
Sarajevo is really cheap. Since we are not in EU, prices could be surprising for most of the foreign students. Packet of Marlboro cigarettes is about 2€, a pint of beer is 1-2€ and cocktails and other fancy drinks are not more than 3-4€. So your Erasmus scholarship will be more than enough for enjoying nightlife and everything else.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Sarajevo? Is there any advice you can give?
It depends if you want dorm private or state ones. I wouldn't recommend any of these, because private ones are good but really strict and you won't feel the freedom to explore the city as much as you want. State dorms are not in really good condition, they are old and a bit away from the city center. So I would recommend a flat. It's easy to find on Olx, normal price is about 150-200€ a month. Of course, it depends of location.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food is amazing! We are known for our special börek and ćevapi. You just have to try these and you'll automatically fall in love! Those are our traditional ones, among the others. The food is quite heavy and with a lot of meat. But all in all, you have some really good restaurants and fast food.
Is it good to eat out in Sarajevo? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Of course and it's not that expensive also. Especially that traditional food that I mentioned, are quite cheap.
My favorite spots are:
- Barhana (restaurant),
- Metropolis (restaurant, cafe),
- Pirpa (fast food).
Is the nightlife good in Sarajevo? Where is good to go?
It depends on what you prefer, but here is my list:
- Aquarius (lounge bar),
- Sloga, Hacienda, Underground, AG (clubs),
- Celtic, Korner, Birtija, Balkan express (pubs).
What advice would you give future students heading to Sarajevo?
Live your student life fullest, don't be afraid of new challenges and experiences, come to Sarajevo and feel the amazing city vibe.
