Erasmus Experience in Santiago de Compostela, Spain by Majka

Why did you choose to go to Santiago de Compostela, Spain?

I wanted to go somewhere far far away. I had two possibilities in Spain - Santiago de Compostela and Valladolid. And when I saw a picture of the cathedral in Santiago for the first time, I fell in love with it and knew which is my Erasmus destination.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I had the scholarship for 5 months and I received 438 € every month. But it depends on many aspects as your home country, the number of applicants at your university, etc.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Santiago de Compostela to other students?

Yes, of course. If you have the possibility to go to Santiago, then go! I mean, it isn't a huge city but it has everything that you need - a lot of students everywhere (Spanish and international ones from all over the world), places to visit, places to party, a big library, nice people around you... you will love it.

What is the food like?

Galician food is delicious. For example, I hated seafood before but once you try the seafood in Galicia, you'll love it forever.

How much does it cost to live in Santiago de Compostela?

Approximately 100 - 200 € per month in shared flats. The prices vary from flat to flat.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

Yes, I consider Spanish quite easy. And if you really want to learn it, you will - it all depends on your attitude.

The University offers intensive and semestral Spanish courses and there's also Erasmus Intensive Language Course (EILC) of Galician language - as there are two official languages in Galicia (do not be surprised if you get emails in Galician :))

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Santiago de Compostela from your city?

By plane (low-cost).

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Santiago de Compostela?

There is a huge amount of clubs in Santiago (Apolo, Retablo, Shango).

If you want some cheap beer, go to Central Perk. And you want some good beer, go to Croques (they have Czech beer and really good tapas).

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Santiago de Compostela?

O Almacén is the best one. And they have fantastic home-made flan.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

The places which I liked the most were Casa das Crechas with small concerts every week and Momo where a man with a guitar played every Tuesday.

And do not miss AMAL - the Euro-arab film festival held in Santiago in October.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Santiago de Compostela in the future?

Buy a raincoat! It rains a lot in Santiago and the wind will destroy your umbrella very quickly.

And by the way - don't let the weather change your good mood. Enjoy Santiago. :)
