Erasmus Experience in Santiago de Compostela, Spain by Carys

Why did you choose to go to Santiago de Compostela, Spain?

I chose to come to Santiago because I was interested in studying in a 'different' part of Spain, rather than in 'traditional' Spain. I'd also worked in Lugo before and really loved Galicia.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

I don't have a scholarship with the university and am here as part of the Erasmus programme.

What is the student lifestyle like in Santiago de Compostela?

Great, very sociable and there are a lot of bars/clubs too. It's a big university so there are a lot of students around!

Would you recommend the city and the University of Santiago de Compostela to other students?

Yes, definitely. If you're looking to really improve your Spanish (no getting away with English here) and also pay incredibly cheap rent, Santiago's the place to be.

What is the food like?

Lovely. There are tapas dishes in the majority of bars, and even food prices aren't that expensive.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Santiago de Compostela?

No, I started looking when I got here and found somewhere within a couple of days.

How much does it cost to live in Santiago de Compostela?

My monthly costs are: 175euro rent, 25euro bills (ish) and then whatever I choose to spend my money on.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

If you have a good knowledge of Spanish before then yes, definitely. Yep, the CLM (Centro de Linguas Modernas) offers a variety of language courses, from A1-C1.

Flight from Santiago to London.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Santiago de Compostela?

Apolo, Gabanna, Copas Rotas, Porrón.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Santiago de Compostela?

Cafe Agarimo, Elefante, Valor Chocolatería

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Cidade de Cultura, the cathedral, a lot of different museums/art galleries.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Santiago de Compostela in the future?

CHOOSE SANTIAGO! You will not regret it at all!
