Experience in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, Spain by Patricia

What is Santa Cruz, Tenerife like to live in? Do you recommend it? How is it?

It's the capital of the island, with the perfect size. Small enough to not necessarily find people everywhere you go, keeping things intimate. It's a city of extraordinary beauty, with an exceptional climate and beach. I'm very happy here.

What's the student vibe like in Santa Cruz, Tenerife?

The student atmosphere depends on The University of La Laguna. You are 8km away, between the social areas and the University. There's a youthful feel in areas such as Calle de la Nora and around the coast. Santa Cruz and La Laguna are now accessible via trams, for weekend trips or for arriving to and from the University.

How much does it cost to live in Santa Cruz, Tenerife?

Living in Santa Cruz is cheap, with myself in fact renting rooms to students at 250 euros a month. Eating is more expensive here than in other Spanish cities as everything is imported. Public transport costs 1 euro per journey, and there are always special prices for students.

Did you find it hard to find accommodation in Santa Cruz, Tenerife? Do you have any advice?

I rent room to students in the heart of the city for 250 euros a month.

What is the country's food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Very tasty! Very distinctive items. Good cheeses and lots of Canarian tomato and banana, as well as a large selection of "papas" (jacket/baked potatoes) in varied spiced sauces known as "mojos".

What places do you recommend visiting in Santa Cruz, Tenerife?

Mount Teide, the town of Garachico, La Laguna cathedral, the mountain village of Masca, Los Acantilados de los Gigantes ("The Cliffs of the Giants"). In the south, there's the coastal resorts of Adeja, las Americas and los Cristianos. There are lots and lots of other places too.

And eating in Santa Cruz, Tenerife? Can you list a few of your favourite spots?

La Tejita is a typically Canarian restaurant and then you have the phenomenal Avenida Anaga (long road following the coast) and the restaurants found on Calle de La Noria. There are always other interesting places to eat along the Rambla Santa Cruz located around the Hotel Mencey.
