Erasmus experience in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

Why did you choose to go to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain?

I didn't only do an exchange semester in Santa Cruz de Tenerife; I spent a year getting to know the island, uni and student life. I chose here because the island has everything you could ever dream of: sun, beaches, good weather all the time, nice people, Spanish culture...

How long did you spend there? How much funding did you receive?

A year.

What is student life like in Santa Cruz de Tenerife?

Amazing! The people are friendly and open minded. There are a few tourists but the north of the island is a lot quieter and most tourists head for the south.

Would you recommend the city and university of Santa Cruz de Tenerife to other students?

Yes, absolutely. You can reach the university at La Laguna really quickly on the tram and you'll also find the 'student pub quarter' in that area. It's great!

How is the food?

Mainly Spanish, but there are also lots of other international restaurants. Because I lived with locals, I got to know (and learned to love) traditional Spanish (Canary) dishes.

How did you find accommodation?

I lived with a host family that I got to know through someone I knew.

How is the cost of accommodation?

The costs of living are similar, if not a bit cheaper, than Germany. You can buy cheap food at the markets and in some supermarkets. In places like McDonalds, the prices are around the same as in Germany.

Is the language easy to understand? Does the university offer language courses?

I studied Spanish for 3 years before my Erasmus trip and when I got there, enrolled in an intensive language course at a language school. But you learn the most about the language in your day-to-day life.

What is the cheapest way of getting to Santa Cruz de Tenerife from your home?

Ryanair.

Where would you say is the best place to go out in Santa Cruz de Tenerife?

La Laguna.

And for food?

There are small, cosy restaurants and cafés everywhere.

Are there any interesting cultural visits to do?

The island has so much to offer and everything is so easy to get to.

Any advice for future students in Santa Cruz de Tenerife?

Don't think, just do it! Be open minded and if you only try one thing, it has to be the Papas Arrugadas with Mojo Rojo!
