Experience in San Diego, United States by Gabriella
What is it like to live in San Diego? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in San Diego would have to be one of the best places to live in the world. I am not just saying that because I am a San Diegan. I've been to Costa Rica, Panama, Italy, Paris, and many other places and it ranks right up there. I suppose the main pro in living in San Diego would be the weather and location. One is an hour away from the mountains, minutes away from the beach, and the desert for those who like quads and off-roading. Aside from the nature and outdoor activities San Diego offers a diverse and infamous night life in downtown Gaslamp Quarter which is San Diego's dining, entertainment and urban shopping district.
What is the student lifestyle like in San Diego?
The student life is one of choice. On days where one would like to take a walk down the beach and study while hearing the waves one could go to Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, La Jolla, Coronado Beach, or Imperial Beach. Lot's of beaches one could choose from all with their own unique energy and attractions. After studying one could catch a wave or get ready for the nightlife in downtown. San Diego is a military, university, and border city. Diversity is everywhere and one will never be bored with food, entertainment, or activities.
How much does it cost to live in San Diego?
To be honest, it is a bit costly to live in San Diego. Especially near La Jolla area. But if you are a student just find areas where it is more economical like Mira Mesa or even Chula Vista. But depending on the school you will be attending it might be best to live in the dorms since driving is sometimes a must depending on the location of your apartment and gas can be costly for students.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in San Diego? Is there any advice you can give?
To be honest I never had to really look for accommodations but according to my friends experiences it does not sound to difficult. Just make sure to look for one online before arriving since there are not too many bed and breakfasts or hostels like in Europe.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is so diverse and so authentic. Japanese, Thai, Mexican, Chinese, Brazilian, Italian, you name it San Diego will most likely have it. The best part of it, it is really amazing! My favorite would have to be Mexican and the California Burrito. It is a carne asada burrito with french fries, yes french fries!
What places would you recommend visiting in San Diego?
I recommend visiting La Jolla, Sea World, Julian for some apple pie, Balboa park and museum, The Zoo, and if you are in town the convention center during Comic Con.
Is it good to eat out in San Diego? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes! Lolita's, The Fish Market, Phils BBQ, Los Rancheros (authentic mexican restaurant) or Los Gordos, Bronx Pizza, Las Cuatro Milpas, Hodads, and Benihana's.
Of course there are many many more but these are one of the frequent and top places.
Is the nightlife good in San Diego? Where is good to go?
Yes, pretty much once in Downtown the nightlife is everywhere and will find you!
What advice would you give future students heading to San Diego?
Do not forget your sunscreen, sunglasses, and be ready to have an amazing time with the diversity and places San Diego has to offer.
