Experience in Salmanca, by Paloma from Spain

What do you think about living in Salamanca? Would you recomend it? How is it?

It's an incredible city: the city centre is beautiful. It's small, so everything is very close; the prices are ridiculous and you can go to the party everyday or opt for a more cultural plan: jam sessions, museums, recitations, open-mics, etc. There are several music styles and pubs to go out. There are many people from other parts of the world, and that's what makes an intercultural city with open-minded people.

How is the student life in Salamanca?

You can see young people in the streets all the time. There are all kinds of plans everyday and it's a cheap and accessible city for all the students.

How much cost to live in Salamanca?

Prices for a room vary from 150€ to 300€ (I live in a four bedroom flat in the city centre which costs 900€). If you opt for a flat, you can calmly live for 500€, but if you prefer a residence hall, accommodation&meal fees can vary from 500€ to 1000€. If you buy in Mercadona (a Spanish supermarket) the food is also cheap. The bars are also cheap (1, 80€ pinchos&pint, 3, 50€ pints, 5€ one litre of beer, etc).

Was it hard to find accommodation in Salamanca? Can you give any advice?

It's very easy to go to a real estate, but you will have to pay a very small commission. It's very comfortable because there are many flats in Salamanca and contracts are renovated every year. The real estates control the majority of flats in Salamanca and they give you basically everything ready to move in, but if you want, you can make a little bit of an effort and find a flat (directly from a landlord) and this way avoid paying the commission fee.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Tapas and typical Spanish food are generally common, but there is also a huge offer of vegan and vegetarian food.

Which places do you recommend to visit in Salamanca?

The historical centre is wonderful.

Which are your favourite places to eat in Salmanca?

La taberna de Ángel, Mario's, Cervantes, Isatis...

Which places do you recommend for partying in Salamanca?

  • For those who like Rock: Country, Paki-Pa, Charro Rock, Potemkin, Peeper´s, Imprenta, Submarino...
  • For those who like dancing: Peter´s, Imprenta, Murphy´s, Bisú, Kandhavia...

Any advice you want to give to future students in Salamanca?

Move a lot, make an effort to make all the cultural visits you can, take an advantage of the language exchange meeting with other foreigners, go out a lot and go to the parties offered by the cities which are around (Zamora, Ávila, Valladolid, Cáceres... ) and explore the villages. Don't stop, because it's a city that provides it all, so enjoy to the maximum.
