Erasmus Experience in Salamanca, Spain by Marti
Why did you choose to go to Salamanca, Spain?
The University of Leeds offered a subsidised 4-week language and culture summer school in Salamanca, Spain. Although I had not learnt any Spanish before, I loved other languages and was keen to learn a new one, certain that complete immersion in the language through living in a city where it is so natively spoken would be the best way to learn. It was affordable yet offered me an opportunity to experience a different way of living, culture and cuisine and fit perfectly with my other summer plans.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The Summer School cost roughly £1000 including tuition fees and accommodation (including meals), but excluding transport costs and additional expenses. It was subsidised by £500 for each student and I applied for a further scholarship from the School of Law worth £1000 therefore had my experience completely subsidised.
What is the student lifestyle like in Salamanca?
The University area is surrounded by endless affordable cafes, restaurants, bars and clubs. Students in Salamanca are outgoing and stay out until early morning hours. There is also an abundance of pools and trips to beaches and other cities are frequently organised.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Salamanca to other students?
I attended the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, separate from the University of Salamanca, but I would 100% recommend the city & university life in Salamanca to other students.
What is the food like?
Spanish cuisine is very varied, although vegetarians and vegans may struggle with options, but will not go hungry. Jamón Ibérico is Salamanca's treasure in the form of ham! You can get little ham & cheese baguettes on any corner.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Salamanca?
No, it was included with my summer school.
How much does it cost to live in Salamanca?
£1500 covered 1 month of tuition, accommodation, meals as well as disposable money for going out, drinking, shopping.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Yes. I studied beginner's Spanish and 4 weeks later left with GCSE level knowledge of the language. The teachers are really good, speak to you only in Spanish and help learn by immersion.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Salamanca from your city?
I flew from Manchester to Madrid and took a bus from Madrid directly to Salamanca (bus with A/C and a TV!)
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Salamanca?
Gatsby's, Paniagua, Irish pubs, bars in the Plaza.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Salamanca?
I ate in my accommodation but there are lots of great cafes and restaurants around.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The Plaza, the universities, churches and Cathedrals, the canal, gardens etc.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Salamanca in the future?
Make the most of your time there! You will make unforgettable memories.
