I have found Spain to be a considerably religious country, and as such no wonder that Easter – or as they call it Semana Santa – is a very big deal here. Even if we are talking about the most important Christian holiday worldwide, I can clearly tell that it is surrounded by a much greater sensation than in Hungary. An example to prove this with is that while in Hungary usually we get a couple of days off, in Spain, there are almost two whole weeks devoted to celebrating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Although yesterday was the first official day of the holidays, schools are closed from the beginning of the week until the 30th of March.

Now I would like to tell you how my first day of Semana Santa went.

In the morning, I met my Brazilian friend Kellen to have churros con chocolate at a new place, where it is only 1. 10€. Unfortunately we were told that they do not have the offer during Semana Santa, so disappointed but we tried to find another bar. Afterwards, we returned to the house of my friend in order to plan our trip to Sevilla. It was a great start to the day.

Later on, when at home, my boyfriend and I decided to go out and have a stroll in the city, as the weather was finally very nice in Salamanca. We were not alone with this decision, especially because of the Semana Santa: streets were completely crowded, everyone was enjoying their day off, and even one of the TV channels were shooting on the first day of the celebration. I cannot even imagine, what we will have to experience in Sevilla, which is famous for its Semana Santa. In any case, I was surprisingly ok with so many people around us, because the weather was just so perfect. It might have been the very first day when I finally did not feel cold outside and I could take my coat off. We had a coffee along the way and some ice cream. With the latter, we sat down in the middle of the Plaza Mayor in the company of half of the population of Salamanca. Then we slowly walked back to the car.

After working a little bit at home, we ended the day with a movie that we both enjoyed a lot. It was a relaxing first day of the Semana Santa and very different from how I would otherwise spend it in Hungary. And now, I am looking forward to see my friend again to cook some delicious traditional Brazilian lunch.
