Experience in Ruse, Bulgaria by Alexandra
What is it like to live in Ruse? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
The city of Ruse is located in the north of Bulgaria on the borders with Romania. Ruse is the 5th biggest city in Bulgaria. It's a peaceful town with lots of parks. Ruse is crossed by the river Danube and the view on the banks of the river is breathtaking. I would recommend Ruse as an Erasmus destination because even if it's a small city you can find everything that a student needs.
What is the student lifestyle like in Ruse?
There are many students in Ruse and most of them live in the dormitories of the university. Many crazy parties are held there. There are also many clubs in the city center. The most interesting thing about Ruse is that every Monday is the "student's day" and every club is full of students. Also, every Monday you can find promotions and buy really cheap drinks.
How much does it cost to live in Ruse?
Ruse has really low cost life, so 200 to 300 euros per month are more than enough for a student.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Ruse? Is there any advice you can give?
It is not difficult to find accommodation in Ruse. There are many apartments/studios for rent around the university. You can also stay in the university dormitories. I recommend you the second option because firstly, you live only with students and you can meet many people. Secondly, it is really cheap (30 euros/month if you want to share your room with another person or 60 euros/month if you want to live on your own).
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Bulgarian food is especially based on vegetables. There are also many kinds of soup. My favorite dish is a traditional salad called "shopska salata".
What places would you recommend visiting in Ruse?
Ruse is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen. The architecture in the city center reminds you of Europe during the 19th century, and actually it is. Almost all of the buildings in the city center date back from the 19th century. Bulgarians call Ruse "the small Venice" because of its architecture. So the first place you should visit is the center. You should also visit the park next to the river and the historical museum.
Is it good to eat out in Ruse? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
It's good to eat out in Ruse because you can taste lots of traditional dishes. My favorite spot is a traditional restaurant with live bulgarian music called "Chiflika".
Is the nightlife good in Ruse? Where is good to go?
The nightlife in Ruse is really good. There are many clubs in the city, each with different kind of music. My favorite place is "Funky Buddha" but most of the students go to the biggest club in the city which is called "Showroom" and is located close to the dorms.
What advice would you give future students heading to Ruse?
The advice I would give is just to live your Erasmus in the most crazy way because we only live once.
