Experience in Rotterdam, Netherlands by Nour
What is it like to live in Roterdão? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Rotterdam is an interesting city, especially if you're a student. It's a small city, but it has a lot of life in it. There's always parties, and everyone is mostly friendly.
What is the student lifestyle like in Roterdão?
Hectic, drinking culture, lots of good music, and a lot of going out/chilling.
How much does it cost to live in Roterdão?
I think it can cost around 1000 Euros, but it can be as low as 750 (for rent and living). But that's like bare necessities.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Roterdão? Is there any advice you can give?
There are certain months when it can feel impossible to find a room. During June, July and especially August, you'll see a lot of closed doors. Plan your accommodation in advance, or try to make sure that you're moving at an off-season.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food in the Netherlands isn't very famous for a reason. Most of the good food that I really like is from outside, but the diversity in restaurants is harder to compare with other cities in Europe. Besides this, the Indonesian food is really good, Kapsalon is the go-to meal for drinking, and I've heard Stompot is really good but I still haven't tried it.
What places would you recommend visiting in Roterdão?
Lots of places - the architecture museum, the swan market, Toffler, the cubic houses, oude haaven, the Euromast, and you should check out a football game.
Is it good to eat out in Roterdão? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yeah it's ok, there's a lot of amazing Korean restaurants - my all-time favorite is Gamsot, and I absolutely recommend the Bom-bim-bap (I'm spelling it wrong), but it's the one with the egg. It's so good.
There's also the pancake boats, and the 'African place' near to Oostplein.
Is the nightlife good in Roterdão? Where is good to go?
Yeah it's awesome. Have a fun night, it's hard to have a boring night here in your months in Rotterdam.
What advice would you give future students heading to Roterdão?
Your bike is probably going to get stolen, so buy a cheap bike, and a good luck. Add yourself to some groups for travel within the country, because the travel tickets are way cheaper if you're travelling with more than 5 people. You should check out the jazz scene. It's a good place for drum & bass.
