Experience in Rotterdam, Netherlands by Cheyenne

What is it like to live in Rotterdam? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Rotterdam is the second biggest city of the Netherlands. Yes, we do have many tourists, however, not quite as many as in Amsterdam. Rotterdam is not as overly crowded as Amsterdam and you won't feel like you are already high after you leave Rotterdam Central Station as you would feel there. There are plenty of fun things to do, over a 100 different cultures and the newest architecture.

What is the student lifestyle like in Rotterdam?

We like to go out on the weekends. There are countless clubs, bars, and pubs to go to. Public transport is so easy, the bus, metro, tram or train will take you anywhere you need.

How much does it cost to live in Rotterdam?

To be honest, I don't really know since I live at home still.. I think an average room is somewhere between €300 and €550 a month.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Rotterdam? Is there any advice you can give?

I cannot, still living with mom and dad.

South tends to be cheaper, but there is more criminal activity there. Delfshaven has several student rooms and is affordable for most students. Kralingen/Noord is more expensive I think, but close to Erasmus University, HES and city center. Alexander is more quiet but still close to everything.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

"Kapsalon" (hairdresser) is our local snack to safe you from your hangover; fries, kebab, lettuce, cheese, and garlic sauce all together.

We have over 100 different cultures, so you will definitely find something you like.

What places would you recommend visiting in Rotterdam?

I'd recommend visiting the harbor, Kubus woningen, Markthal, Euromast etc.

Is it good to eat out in Rotterdam? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

I don't have a favorite spot because there are too many places I still need to go to.

Is the nightlife good in Rotterdam? Where is good to go?

There are countless bars and clubs for all kinds of people. Stadhuisplein and Witte de Withstraat are very popular.

What advice would you give future students heading to Rotterdam?

If you decide to go anywhere by train, make sure to have a back-up plan because NS has problems everyday *sigh*

And of course have fun!
