Erasmus Experience in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, by Jair

Why did you choose to go to Rotterdam, The Netherlands?

For its culture, the prevalence of English, and its standing in the financial sphere.

For how long did you receive a grant? How much money did you receive for maintenance?

In my case the grant lasted for 4 months and I received 300 euros a month. It's not that much when compared to the price of student flat rents. But the experience was very much worth it.

What is the student atmosphere like in Rotterdam?

It's very good, and full-on. The local people aren't that accustomed to mixing with the students, but there's a very strong Erasmus network.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Rotterdam to other students?

Yes I would, Erasmus University is an incredible institution with a lot of facilities and services and very good lecturers, who are well prepared to resolve your problems. The city is peaceful and you can easily reach every part in less than half an hour by bike. Not to mention, it's a city which combines modernity and tradition.

What's the country's cuisine like?

The cuisine is not the best, but you can find Turkish, Indian, Chinese and Italian restaurants in every area.

Was it difficult finding accommodation in Rotterdam?

Yes, it's best to set aside lots of time and sign up early for the flats that the university provides. They seem expensive but they're very well located and well worth it. Above all it's important to be close to the university.

How much did it cost to live in Rotterdam?

Approximately 1, 000 euros a month.

What about the language? Did you attend a course at the university?

I signed up for English at the university and it was very good. Everyone speaks English.

What's the cheapest way of getting to Rotterdam from your city?

By plane, there's a lot of low-cost airlines.

Which nightlife venues would you recommend in Rotterdam?

I signed up to the ESN, a student association. It helped me integrate and they organise nights out in the best clubs.
