Erasmus Experience in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, by Daniel
Why did you choose to go to Rotterdam, The Netherlands?
I've always been drawn to Nordic countries and in particular the Netherlands, which is forward-thinking whilst still committed to its traditions.
For how long did you receive a grant?
I received it for ten months.
What's the student atmosphere like in Rotterdam?
It's a very multicultural city, there's no lack of integration, communication and connection between the city's residents.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Rotterdam to other students?
Of course! It's one of the most lively and modern cities in Europe and its university is amongst the most respected.
What's the country's cuisine like?
Unfortunately, the Dutch cuisine is not renowned for its quality. However, the city benefits from a couple of weekly traditional markets where you can come across food from around the world, so you're not limited to eating Dutch food.
Was it difficult finding accommodation in Rotterdam
Not at all. The University arranged it all.
Was living in Rotterdam expensive?
The standard of living in the city is very high, so the prices are quite high too.
What about the language? Did you attend a course at the University?
I didn't consider learning Dutch. In the city, everyone speaks English and in the university, all of the courses were taught in English. So if you can hold your own in Shakespeare's language, you won't have any problems.
What's the cheapest way of getting to Rotterdam from your city?
A direct flight to Amsterdam, and from there I took the train to Rotterdam.
Have you any recommendations for eating out in Rotterdam?
O'pazzo, the best Italian restaurant I've ever been to.
And a cultural recommendation?
The Boijmans Museum in the centre, it's beautiful!
Any advice you'd like to give future students in Rotterdam
Go with the flow, live like a Hollander, and enjoy the experience!
