Experience in Rijeka, Croatia by Petra
What is it like to live in Rijeka? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Rijeka is 3rd largest city in Croatia. It is student city full of young people. It is situated on the northern part of Croatia on the seaside. The climate is Mediterranean with all four seasons. Rijeka has beautiful beaches 10 minutes from the city centre but also mountains 20 minutes away. Night life is great, a lot of bars and clubs. Cute restaurants and food bars. Well connected with rest of Europe (plane, train). Close to Italy and Slovenia (1, 5 h by car). Prices are low compering with West Europe cities.
What is the student lifestyle like in Rijeka?
Student lifestyle in Rijeka is great. A lot of apartments for rent and student dormitory close to city centre. Student restaurants and a lot of bars and clubs to go out and have fun. Prices are low compering to West Europe countries. Lots of students from all around Croatia, but also other countries in last few years. Citizens in Rijeka are mind opened and respect cultural, religious and other differences.
How much does it cost to live in Rijeka?
To live in Rijeka cost very similar as to live in other Eastern Europe countries. To rent a apartment with roommates is approx. 150-200€ per person. Transport for student is 10-15 € per month for all bus zones. Food in student restaurants is cheap and the drinks in bars as well, especially compering to West Europe countries.

It is not difficult to find accommodation. There are a lot of apartments available for rent which can be found online.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Food is mostly Mediterranean, similar to Italian. Pizza, pasta, meat, fish. Not that spicy although in Rijeka can be found Mexican and Chinese couisins as well. My favorite dishes are grilled fish and vegetables.
What places would you recommend visiting in Rijeka?
Centre of Rijeka, Korzo is beautiful and full of people with a lot of café bars. Trsat is beautiful. There is a castle and one of Croatian most important churches. Kantrida is on the west part of Rijeka, 10 minutes with bus from city centre. There is a main Rijeka football stadium and waterpolo pools. In centre is located stunning national theatre Ivan pl. Zajc.
Is it good to eat out in Rijeka? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
To eat in Rijeka is delicious and not very expensive. Because of Italian influence most popular dishes in Rijeka are pizza and pasta but also Bosnian dishes like cevapcici. Great restaurants are located in centre and in Trsat. One of my favorite are Pizzeria Spagho, Bracera, Gardens in city centre. In Trsat are Tarsa and Trsatika.
Is the nightlife good in Rijeka? Where is good to go?
Night life in Rijeka is great for students. The best places to go out and listen popular music, mostly house are Karolina bar and Mystique bar. Also Rijeka is well known as a rock city so you can listen some of tribute bands in Palach, Korzo bar, Život, The Beertija, etc.
