What is it like to live in Rijeka? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

It’s one of the most open-minded cities in Croatia. It’s a melting pot of many surrounding cultures. It’s big enough so that you bave everything you need close to you, but still small enough to feel cozy. A lot of people from other parts of Croatia choose to study here.

What is the student lifestyle like in Rijeka?

Most campuses are located in/near the city center, so they’re easy to get to. There’s a big number of students and people are generally good English speakers, so you should feel welcomed. The people of Rijeka would love to show you around their city and teach you about their culture. There are plenty of places to party as well.

How much does it cost to live in Rijeka?

Living in Rijeka isn’t too expensive. The dorms are quite affordable and there’s plenty of things you can get a student’s discount on, so that’s great.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Rijeka? Is there any advice you can give?

It isn’t too difficult. As I said before, there are dorms, but there are also hostels and apartments for rent. I’d recommend applying for a dorm room early because it can be difficult to get in or renting an apartment with a roommate so you can split the expenses.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

There are plenty of food choices - from fast food options to local food, and the prices aren’t too high. I like everything that includes pasta and since Rijeka is close to Italy, we do our pasta justice.

What places would you recommend visiting in Rijeka?

I would recommend visiting city Center, especially the Old Town, and the Trsat Castle, as well as the nearby city of Opatija, or any of the beautiful coastline walkways.

Is it good to eat out in Rijeka? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Even though Rijeka natives don’t eat out that often, there are a few places that I always come back to, such as Štorija, Submarine, Caracca...

Is the nightlife good in Rijeka? Where is good to go?

There are plenty of clubs in the very center of the city and you can’t go wrong with any of them. Most of them play a certain type of music, but there are some that play English songs, as well. Whatever you choose, you can’t go wrong, because the atmosphere is super alive wherever you go.

What advice would you give future students heading to Rijeka?

Find a local to help you make your way around town. They’ll be able to show you all the best places and make sure you don’t overpay for something because you’re a foreigner. Older generations aren’t the best English speakers, so having a local by your side will help you navigate your way around the city, and they’ll make sure you get the best experience possible. But don’t worry, we love introducing “outsiders” to our city and our culture.:)
