Erasmus Experience in Reykjavík, Iceland by Lisa
Why did you choose to go to Reykjavík, Iceland?
I love nature and travel. Combine but studies seemed like a perfect fit. I saw a video from Iceland and I was hooked. My university has a exchange with the university here In Reykjavik. I have wanted to go to Iceland for a long time, so this was an easy choise.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
It for one semester. I get a scholarship from Erasmus of around 270 euro / 2700 Swedish krona. That is 70 % of the scolarship, I will get the other 30 % when I get back. Honestly, that isn't enough for living in the centre of Reykjavik. The rent is expensive and sort of everything else. What you can do is finding an room outside of the city, this makes it less expensive.
I would recommend you to have some savings or apply for other scolarships as well. But Iceland is amazing to live in, I don't regret my choice!
What is the student lifestyle like in Reykjavík?
They have orientation days in the beginning where you will have a mentor. There is a charity of bars and clubs, and many of them has a happy hour. I like the Dubliner (pub), Kiki (dancing) and Tivoli is good as well. There is a lot of fun quiz around town as well.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Reykjavík to other students?
Definitely, have really enjoyed my stay. The city has a lot of character with street art, small restaurants and the mountains just around the corner. But I really recommend renting a car with some fun people, a fun way to see Iceland!
What is the food like?
Good. The fish market is lovely, has an amazing white chocolate cheesecake. Icelandic street food has Icelandic food. A cheaper choice. The student cellar is a great way to meet other students.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Reykjavík?
I lived at a hostel for the first few days and I found my permanent accomodation when arriving. So don't be to nervous if you can't find one. Can most of the time get it even after arriving, but it will probably be more expensive.
How much does it cost to live in Reykjavík?
Like previous mention, it is really expensive even for a shared room. Think that Iceland needs to be counted as one of the more expensive countries when giving scolarship.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The language is really hard to learn. I still only know some short sentences. It is a little bit easier since I'm from Scandinavia.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Reykjavík from your city?
By plane or yellow submarine.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Reykjavík?
Kaffi barinn is good and also the other options I've mentioned.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Harpa is nice. Also Hallgrimskirkja, viking boat, the national museum and other galleries.
