Erasmus Experience in Reykjavík, Iceland by Aleksandar

Why did you choose to go to Reykjavík, Iceland?

I got a research opportunity from my University in Graz. It was connected to geothermal energy, so I considered Island to be the best choice for the research. I also heard good reviews about the culture and art scene. Being a fan of Björk was also a starter.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

Two months. I receive around 400 Euros. This should cover accomodation in a room in the suburbs.

What is the student lifestyle like in Reykjavík?

A lot of students, I guess. Natives and foreigners as well. There is a substantial student community and lots of young people in the city.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Reykjavík to other students?

Yes, definitely. The experience is worth.

What is the food like?

Delicious. A lot of things to try out, typical Islandic touch to the food can not be described with words.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Reykjavík?

Only premium membership to the website.

How much does it cost to live in Reykjavík?

Hard to answer, depends on the person. If you save money, be very economical when shopping for food and drinks. Double the price of your EU country of residence costs.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

Language is Germanic, has few different letters which are to be learned, except from that, it is not hard. Courses should be available, I did not attend them though, I learned by communicating as much as possible with the locals.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Reykjavík from your city?

There are low cost flights, such as Wizzair from Serbia to Sweden, than go by bus to Copenhagen, called Neptun bus, the airport in CPH is within the metro system. From there there is Wow air taking you to Island. Notice-they all charge baggage, so be economical, you can buy most things in Iceland.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Reykjavík?

The main street near the Parliament. Downtown. Lots of places to choose. Just follow your instincts.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Reykjavík?

I ate at the canteen at the University, it was reasonable.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Harpa center. National museum of Island... many more I guess.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Reykjavík in the future?
