What is it like to live in Rethymno? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I would definitely recommend Rethymno! It is one of the best cities for a student. I don't know from where to start! The city has an ideal size, not too big, not too small. So, it is very easy to go around with no transportation, though a bike can be useful but not very important! It is easy to use bike because of the special pavement and the beautiful street near the beach. The city is kind of divided into two sections, the lovely old town and the contemporary part. Maybe the only cons is that the University is out of town but it is situated to a beautiful place in the nature.

What is the student lifestyle like in Rethymno?

Rethymno is one of the best cities to live as a student and not only. The fact that everything is near makes you save a lot of time. Also, there are always things going on because there are many young people, and you never get bored. There is some kind of a mentality in that city and everyone does a hobby (which is usually cheap) and loves to have fun. Of course there are many places to drink alcohol and listen to live music.

How much does it cost to live in Rethymno?

It depends on the kind of the accommodation that you will find. With flatmate or not. For me it was around 500 euros, hobbies included.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Rethymno? Is there any advice you can give?

It is not difficult. The best situation for a student to live is the old town and near the national garden. Also, look for flatmates. There are many kind of houses. The new ones are more expensive, around 300 euros. The older ones are not very cheap, around 200 euros but they can have the problems a very old house can have, especially during the rainy weather. Electricity and internet are not included. You need to be a little open with the bills because there are possibilities of unreliable owners...

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

the food is one of the best parts. I advise you to shop every week from the flea market near your house. There are many tasty traditional dishes. One that flashes now into my mind is goat tsigariasto with greens.

What places would you recommend visiting in Rethymno?

The old town, the Fortezza castle and the surroundings, and the surrounding nature-little forests. The best is to go to the Southern beaches where you can do camping, nudism, or just a day trip!

Is it good to eat out in Rethymno? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

It is, though I prefer eating at home. For homemade and not expensive food try Stella's and Rakodikio. For a little more expensive try "Ta dyo rou". For the best sandwich ever try Tyraki (next to Rakodikio). For falafel visit Syntrofi, where you can also find a company playing music in the evenings.

Is the nightlife good in Rethymno? Where is good to go?

You can choose between bars such Metropolis, Fortezza, Ice (it's not an ice bar). You can find more traditional bars and restaurants as Kaloumba cafe, Havesiliki, Fonografos, Halikouti.

What advice would you give future students heading to Rethymno?

Explore all possibilities! Make good friends! Have fun! Enjoy this lovely town! Don't overlook it because of its size.
