My Erasmus Experience in Prague, Czech Republic - by Ivan

Why did you choose to go to Prague, Czech Republic?

I chose Prague because it’s such an impressive city. Another reason was because its culture is totally different to Spanish culture, so I wanted the challenge of trying to adapt to it. Additionally, even though Prague’s a big city, it’s a relatively comfortable place to live in.

How long did your scholarship last? How much were you paid?

I did a three month internship with a company.

What’s the student life like in Prague?

There’s a great student atmosphere in Prague because the city’s full of student events - not just parties, but cultural events, too. There are lots of international students too.

Would you recommend the city and University of Prague to other students?

The city’s just marvellous, full of historical places to visit both in the city and in the surrounding areas.

What’s the food like in Prague?

The food here is a little different - soup and meat are the main dishes. It’s also quite greasy. You should definitely try goulash, since it’s the most traditional Czech dish.

Did you find it hard to find somewhere to live in Prague?

It’s a bit of a grind trying to find accommodation, but if you search thoroughly and manage to find something (and it’s better to do this while you’re actually in Prague rather than over the internet) rents are relatively cheap.

How expensive is everyday life in Prague?

Living in Prague isn’t extremely expensive, especially if you don’t live in the city centre. Basic food prices (pasta, rice, milk…) aren’t high, but other things like meat and fish cost more.

How are you finding the language? Have you signed up to a course at the university?

The language is practically impossible to learn. If you manage to learn enough in the time you’re there to order beers in a bar, you can count yourself as successful.

What’s the cheapest way of getting to Prague from your home city?

Flights from Spain are never too expensive.

What are the best places for partying in Prague?

The nightlife in Prague has several different scenes - from the big clubs (Karlovy Lazne, Duplex, Roxy…) to smaller parties, like the Erasmus ones on every week. There are also ‘music club’ areas which are more affordable than the bigger clubs.

What about eating out in Prague? What are your favourite places?

The restaurants in the city are quite expensive, but you can sample many different traditional Czech dishes there. You can find everything here, from Italian to Thai restaurants.

What does Prague have to offer in terms of culture?

The city is full of all kinds of museums. The Communism Museum and the Sex Machine Museum are two really interesting ones! Aside from museums, the city boasts many unmissable historical buildings.

Do you have any advice for future students coming to Prague?

Enjoy every second of your experience in this wonderful city, but forget about learning Czech - it’s impossible!
