I would not recommand to live in Port Louis. You can visit during the day, but not recommanded at night.

There are hotels on the Waterfront

Food in very good. Great variety of local food: Chinese, Indian & creole. Street food and some restaurants

The Waterfront, the Chinese area.

Le Cafe de la Presse, Chez Aline, and Labourdonnais & Suffren hotels

No night life. Perhaps happy hour at Le Suffren
What advice would you give future students heading to Port Louis?
Do not head to Port Louis for accomodation. There are much better places on the island.
