Experience in Port Louis, Mauritius

What is it like to live in Port Louis? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

It's like having everything you need near you. Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius and it always lively. The roads are crowded most of the time, there are pedestrians everywhere and if you just take a walk through the roads of Port Louis, without any rush, you will be awed with everything, the people, the buildings, the cars, the trees, the buzz. It's like watching a movie. You just feel content.

It's a blend of traditions and modernity. Students will find whatever they need, be it transport facilities, shops/bookstores, boutiques, restaurants and taverns, cinemas and many more. Most people have to go through Port Louis on their way to university.

How much does it cost to live in Port Louis?

For a student to rent an apartment/flat or to find somewhere to stay, it would be affordable.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Port Louis? Is there any advice you can give?

I would say that it could be a bit difficult, since there are not many hostels and apartments for rent. But it is a small island, there are many other towns and villages to look for cheap accommodation.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Great! Food can be found almost everywhere, with the cheapest from the street sellers to having the best quality from restaurants like Rozi Darbaar (If you are a fan of Indian food) or Nando's. There's also a McDonald's and Subway, Pizza hut and many more places to eat.

What places would you recommend visiting in Port Louis?

The Waterfront is probably the most popular place for students, where you can eat, shop, go to the cinema, have fun and enjoy a view of the ocean all the while. Place d'Armes is one of my favoritr place to just walk through. It's always buzzing with people and the tall buildings and busy roads just add to my fascination of the place. You should definitely go for a walk through DesForges street. On a Saturday night, preferably. You could visit Champs de Mars on a racing day, to watch the horses and the people. You can go for a morning jog/walk to Signaux mountains. The view is really nice.

Is it good to eat out in Port Louis? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Definitely. If you are going for cheap but tasty, I would recommend the shawarma at Plaine Verte. There's a street seller near Patisserie Nabeel, he sells the best shawarmas/kebabs i've ever tasted. You could go through La rue Desforges for other street food. There are a couple of restaurants there too. If you want high quality Indian food go to Rozi Darbaar. Panarottis', Gloria's, Chop Wok are some of my favorites too.

Is the nightlife good in Port Louis? Where is good to go?

I don't know much about the night life. But la rue Desforgeson a Saturday night or Caudan Waterfront are good plans.

What advice would you give future students heading to Port Louis?

It's hot. Very hot.
