Experience in Patras, Greece, by Damian
What is it like to live in Patras? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Patras is, what we call in Greece, a student city. It hosts 2 universities and most of the people you'll see outside are students. Once a year there's the Patras carnival (February/March) and people from all over the country come to have fun. It rains a lot during the winter and it's really hot in summer. You will also experience some earthquakes here. From mid July to late August Patras streets are almost empty because every student goes back to their hometowns. It's definitely one of the best places for students.
What is the student lifestyle like in Patras?
Everything is cheap. You can find an apartment from around 130€ per month. Supermarkets and restaurants are also cheap. There are many night clubs to party all the week and if you want something more quiet pay a visit at the Ifestou street. Once you visit Patras you won't want to leave!
How much does it cost to live in Patras?
As I said above, things are not expensive here. Despite the rent you'll pay around 50€ for electricity every two months and 15€ for the water bill also very two months. Student bus tickets cost 0.60 € or 0.80 € one way. In general you'll need maximum 700 € to live an enjoyable life.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Patras? Is there any advice you can give?
It depends on how long you'll stay. Some people won't rent their houses for three or six months only. There are a lot of apartments for renting any time you need.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is the typical greek food. Souvlaki and pita is what most of the students consume, but there are also chinese restaurants and a big variety of Greek kitchen.
