I want to find a house NOW!

My experience in Palermo, Italy by Antonio

How is Palermo as a place to live? Would you recommend it? What's the city like?

Palermo is a beautiful city if you keep up a hobby for fun. When I was studying aerospace engineering, I didn't have a hobby for long periods of time, but with the right friends I still managed to have fun. The rhythm of life is very dependent on your own commitments, but other than that I would recommend it to Erasmus students who don't want to study too much.

What's the student atmosphere like in Palermo?

The students in Palermo are great in terms of finding places to go out in the evenings and places to party, even if the lessons and the exams don't make it possible to be up till dawn every evening.

What's the cost of living in Palermo?

As a city, Palermo is much cheaper than lots of others, food doesn't make up a big chunk of costs and you can find accommodation costing between 150€ for a shared apartment, and 360€ for a studio.

Is it hard to find accommodation in Palermo? Do you have any advice regarding this?

If you don't have high expectations, you'll find accommodation easily throughout the year, and you'll find some great places with a bit of extra money, but there are the most options between July and September.

What's the food like in the city? What are your favourite dishes?

The city has a big tradition of typical dishes, certain fried specialities are famous such as the panelle made with chickpea flour and potato croquettes, but in the areas near the sea there are various places with amazing fresh fish.

What places would you recommend to visit in Palermo?

To discover Palermo you should just go to the old centre and see with your own eyes the little treasures hidden in the city.

And to eat in Palermo? Where are your favourite places?

Every little restaurant, food vans and other places like that are good. I don't have a favourite place.
