Erasmus Experience in Palermo, Italy by Dylan

Why did you choose to go to Palermo, Italy?

My first choice was Bologna but there were no places left so I turned to Sicily and thus Palermo, choice I don't regret at all.

How long is your stay? What is the amount of aid you receive?

My stay lasted 11 months, I received about 2000€ for the overall stay. But certain aids came after my stay something that would have been useful a little before.

How is the student atmosphere in Palermo?

Great, between old Palermo and student life at the university, you feel completely integrated. In addition to the Erasmus, there are 2 organizations, EtU and ESN. Quite different from each other, but the proposed trips make it possible to discover the culture of a life totally remote from that which we can live on a daily basis.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Palermo to other students?

Of course. Difficult to locate at the beginning but once you know get to know the city, it's great. A bike is quite useful to move around and visit some places although the traffic is quite dangerous from time to time.

How is food in this country?

Very good. I advise "The Cassette", "It Cannello". Otherwise the seafood is very present on the island.

Have you had any difficulty finding accommodation in Palermo?

I spoke to Davide Rivituso for the accommodation but then I found one by myself to pay less.

What is the cost of living in Palermo?

Very cheap even if merchants always try to play the foreigners, people are mostly poor but they are happy to be living there, and that is priceless.

How is the language learning? Have you been to language courses organized by the university?

Yes, courses are organized by Istra for all foreign students. But for my part, I learnt much more by hanging out with the Sicilians.

What is the most economical way to get to Palermo from your city?

The plane, with Ryanair or Transavia. I think these are the two least expensive companies.

What places would you recommend to party in Palermo?

Vuceria and Ballaro. But here's a tip, do not go alone because people tend to be aggressive.

Advice for future students in Palermo?

Go with some money because the scholarship takes some time to arrive. Do not walk alone in the streets of Ballaro or Vuceria. I was assaulted, I had nothing but I was very lucky. But other than that, enjoy, because it's very short.
