Erasmus Experience in Oulu, Finland by Jessica
Why did you choose to go to Oulu, Finland?
Because I always wanted to live in a Northern country and my university had an Erasmus Agreement with the university of Oulu.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
From September to the end of January. I received only the money to cover the apartment rent.
What is the student lifestyle like in Oulu?
It's great, awesome! the best student city! And compared to other friends experiences, Oulu is the best.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Oulu to other students?
Yes, absolutely.
What is the food like?
Compared to italian food not so good, but I liked it, mostly salmon and the bakery!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Oulu?
It has been quite difficult and I stayed in a temporary apartment for the first two weeks and then I accepted an offer from PSOAS.
How much does it cost to live in Oulu?
More than in Italy, but not too much. And students have many advantages and discounts on transport and meals at lunch.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Finnish is really difficult, but you don't have problems speaking in English. Everyone understands it! and there is the opportunity to learn Finnish at University and with courses organized by the city hall.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Oulu from your city?
By plane to Helsinki and by train from Helsinki to Oulu.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Oulu?
Apollo club, Tivoli, Dione.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Oulu?
The pancake house in the Kauppatori!
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
I haven't had the chance yet to visit them, but I know the Tietomaa museum is great!
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Oulu in the future?
Get a bike! The cycle tracks are great and you can bike every day of the year!
