Why did you choose to go to Oulu, Finland?
I wanted to go far in the North and still have quite a big city.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I am here for 5 months and got 270€ a month. Perfect for me to pay for the rent, which is very cheap with 267€ with 18 m² in a 70 m² shared apartment.
What is the student lifestyle like in Oulu?
Lots of parties, events, get-togethers organized by different student and international student unions.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Oulu to other students?
Yeah, definitely!
What is the food like?
Meals in the restaurants in the university are cheap, very healthy and tasty! You get bread, fresh salad, a drink + water.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Oulu?
No. PSOAS organized everything.
How much does it cost to live in Oulu?
Rent 270€, lunch in university Mo-Fr 2. 60€. Stuff at supermarkets is quite expensive... And alcohol also of course.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Finnish is crazy weird and hard to learn. There are lots of courses available, in addition to that "Language-Tandems" or "Cafe-Lingua", where people from different nations meet and get to know each other.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Oulu from your city?
Flight.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Oulu?
Definitely! Loads of students and enough clubs to party, student offers and even electronic parties.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Oulu?
The Pancake House and the Burger Grill / bar Otto K.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Not that much in Oulu itself, but Helsinki, Stockholm are nice to see. Most important part: Lapland and the "Mökkis", classic finnish cabins in the nature.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Oulu in the future?
Get warm clothes for winter, bring alcohol with you.
