Experience in Ostrava, Czech Republic by Ondřej

What is it like to live in Ostrava? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

The city is so much alive. Mainly in the city's centre, there is a lot of fun. Almost everyday there are events happening, depends only on you whether you choose entertainment, culture, sport, party or something else. Though the centre of the city is very rich in this, Im not sure about the other parts of the city.

As I said, you can always do something. Ostrava has developed lately so much as far as sutdent life is concerned, so there are many parties, workshops, lectures etc.

How much does it cost to live in Ostrava?

Not much really. Depends on where you live, but since I live in a centre and I have everything I need 5 mins of walking [very benefical], I pay around 3500 CZK/month [135 euro]. Lunch is around 4 euro etc.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Ostrava? Is there any advice you can give?

There are many halls of residence, some are on higher level, some are on worse, but I would recommend Kampus Palace or finding a shared flat

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

In the centre you have variety of cuisines, so theres always something to choose from

What places would you recommend visiting in Ostrava?

Industrial part of Ostrava, which is a proud site for every Ostrava citizen. Then some museums, clubs, pubs, educational centres [centrum Pant] and many more

Jack and Daniels restaurant in the centre is great, restaurant Skočdopole is great too, or bistro Hogo Fogo also in the centre

Probably the best in the whole country. In the centre there is always something happening. The most popular destination to party is Stodolní street, but also popular is absinth club in the centre (you need a password to get there). Or a virtual reality bar near Kampus palace called Realita Bar

What advice would you give future students heading to Ostrava?

Do not stay only in ostrava, there are many beautiful things around the city (Lysá mountain) and others. Also, Ostrava is quite sport city (Golden Spike), so its not only about partying. I would recommend to visit some lectures, our university has a lot of famous people who give great lectures
